20 Important Characters in The Mahabharata

20 Important Characters in The Mahabharata

The Mahabharata is one of the greatest and longest ancient stories in the world. At its heart, it is a story about a massive family disagreement that leads to a giant war. The fight is between two groups of cousins: the Pandavas (the good side) and the Kauravas (the jealous side).

Because the story is so large, it has hundreds of characters. Here are the 20 most important characters, explained in simple language.

The Elders and Teachers

1. Bhishma

He is the grand-uncle of both the Pandavas and the Kauravas. He was a great warrior who took a strict vow never to marry and never to become king so that his father’s other children could rule. Because of his sacrifice, he received a blessing to choose the exact time of his own death. He guided the family for generations but was forced to fight on the Kaurava side during the war due to his duty to the throne.

2. Dhritarashtra

He is the blind king of the kingdom and the father of the Kauravas. Because he was blind, his younger brother Pandu originally became king. After Pandu died, Dhritarashtra took over. He loved his eldest son, Duryodhana, so much that he became blind to his son’s evil actions, which eventually caused the great war.

3. Gandhari

She is the wife of King Dhritarashtra and the mother of the Kauravas. When she married her blind husband, she chose to tie a piece of cloth over her eyes for the rest of her life so she would not enjoy anything her husband could not see. She was a deeply righteous woman who repeatedly warned her sons against fighting.

4. Kunti

She is the mother of the first three Pandava brothers (Yudhishthira, Bhima, and Arjuna) and the secret mother of Karna. She possessed a special divine mantra that allowed her to call upon the gods to bless her with children. She was a strong, brave mother who kept her family together during years of poverty and hiding.

5. Guru Dronacharya

He was the royal teacher who trained both the Pandava and Kaurava princes in archery and martial arts. He loved Arjuna the most out of all his students. Even though he loved the Pandavas, he had to fight for the Kauravas during the war because the kingdom paid for his livelihood.

The Five Pandava Brothers

6. Yudhishthira

He is the eldest Pandava brother. He is famous for always speaking the truth and strictly following dharma (the path of righteousness). However, he had one big weakness: gambling. He lost his entire kingdom, his wealth, and his family in a loaded game of dice against his cousins, which forced them into exile in the forest for 13 years.

7. Bhima

He is the second Pandava brother and the strongest of them all. He had the physical strength of thousands of elephants. Bhima was a master at using the mace (a heavy metal club). He loved food and was deeply protective of his family. He took a vow to kill Duryodhana and all his brothers to avenge the insults against their wife, Draupadi.

8. Arjuna

He is the third Pandava brother and the greatest archer in the world. He was the favorite student of Dronacharya and a very close friend of Lord Krishna. Before the big war started, Arjuna became sad and confused about fighting his own family. Krishna gave him the famous holy guidance known as the Bhagavad Gita to give him courage.

9. Nakula

He is the fourth Pandava brother and the twin brother of Sahadeva. He was born to Pandu’s second wife, Madri, but was raised lovingly by Kunti. Nakula was famous for being exceptionally handsome, a master of training horses, and a highly skilled sword fighter.

10. Sahadeva

He is the youngest Pandava brother. He was highly intelligent, quiet, and possessed the gift of knowing the future. However, he was cursed so that if he revealed his predictions to anyone on his own, his head would break into pieces. He was an expert in astrology and cattle farming.

The Core Allies and Foes

11. Lord Krishna

He is the cousin of the Pandavas and a human avatar of the supreme god Vishnu. Krishna chose not to pick up weapons during the war. Instead, he became the chariot driver for Arjuna. With his supreme wisdom and clever strategies, he guided the Pandavas to victory against overwhelming odds.

12. Draupadi

She is the beautiful and fiery princess who became the common wife to all five Pandava brothers. After Yudhishthira lost her in the dice game, the Kauravas dragged her into the royal court and tried to humiliate her by pulling off her saree. Krishna saved her honor through a miracle. She vowed to leave her hair untied until she washed it in the blood of the Kauravas who insulted her.

13. Duryodhana

He is the eldest brother of the Kauravas and the main villain of the story. He was intensely jealous of the Pandavas because they were stronger, smarter, and well-liked by the people. His deep greed for the throne made him refuse to give even a tiny piece of land to his cousins, sparking the ultimate war.

14. Karna

He is one of the most tragic heroes in the story. He was actually the secret eldest son of Kunti, born before she married, but he was abandoned and raised by a poor chariot driver. Despite facing constant insults for his lower social status, he became an archer as brilliant as Arjuna. Duryodhana treated him as an equal and gave him a kingdom, making Karna completely loyal to him, even though it meant fighting against his own biological brothers.

15. Shakuni

He is the maternal uncle of the Kauravas (the brother of Gandhari). He was a highly cunning mastermind who used magic dice made from his father’s bones that always rolled the numbers he wanted. He orchestrated the infamous dice game to destroy the Pandavas.

16. Dusasana

He is the younger brother of Duryodhana. He was the one who physically dragged Queen Draupadi by her hair into the public court, making him one of the most hated figures in the epic.

17. Abhimanyu

He is the brave young son of Arjuna and Subhadra (Krishna’s sister). He learned how to enter the deadly Chakravyuha while still in his mother’s womb. He fought brilliantly but was unfairly killed by multiple warriors.

18. Ashwatthama

He is the powerful son of Guru Dronacharya. Blinded by rage after his father’s death, he committed a terrible sin by attacking the Pandava camp at night and killing Draupadi’s sleeping children.

19. King Dhrupada

He is the King of Panchala and the father of Draupadi. He performed a massive holy fire ritual to obtain children who could kill Dronacharya and support the Pandavas.

20. Vidura

He is the half-brother to Dhritarashtra and Pandu. He served as the wise prime minister and repeatedly warned the king about Duryodhana’s wicked behavior, though his words were ignored.
